Thomas Hampson at St. Stephen’s Cathedrale
Over het evenement
Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Vienna's breathtaking Stephansdom for the ultimate concert set to awake your understanding of opera.
Listen to star baritone Thomas Hampson at one of his rare performances in Austria — and not only in the country's most historic church, Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, but also in one of the most beautiful sound spaces in the world.
Accompanied by cathedral organist Konstantin Reymaier, Thomas Hampson sings songs by Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler, as well as arias by Richard Wagner. After almost 20 years, the American baritone is delighted to once again fill Vienna's landmark with the warmth and expressiveness of his voice.
Thomas Hampson is considered an opera, concert and lieder singer, an exceptional artist and 'ambassador of the Lied'. How fitting that several works by the 'Lieder Prince' Schubert are on the programme, including his Ave Maria. From Mahler's song repertoire, we hear settings of the poetry collection 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn', including Urlicht and Es sungen drei Engel, which found their way into Mahler's Symphonies 2 and 3. 'They are a diary of existence. That's true of songs in general, but of these songs in particular,' says Thomas Hampson on the Wunderhorn‐Lieder he was also involved in their critical edition. The program is rounded off with well‐known opera arias by Wagner, such as O, du mein holder Abendstern from Tannhäuser.
St. Stephen's Cathedral is delighted to welcome Thomas Hampson, one of the most important, innovative and sought‐after vocal soloists of our time. The proceeds of the concert will go to the preservation of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
