The Philharmonia Orchestra London will perform selected works by Lutoslawski, Beethoven, and Stravinsky under the baton of Esa‐Pekka Salonen at the Cankjarev Dom.

Established in 1945, the Philharmonia Orchestra is one of the world’s great orchestras. It has the greatest claim of any orchestra to be the UK’s National Orchestra. Acknowledged as the UK’s foremost musical pioneer, with an extraordinary recording legacy, the Philharmonia leads the field for its quality of playing, and for its innovative approach to audience development, residencies, music education and the use of new technologies in reaching a global audience. In 2011/12 the Orchestra is performing more than 160 concerts, as well as presenting chamber performances by the Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and recording scores for films, CDs and computer games. The Orchestra’s extensive touring schedule this season also includes performances in more than thirty of the finest international concert halls in Europe, China and the United Arab Emirates, with conductors including Esa‐Pekka Salonen, Lorin Maazel and Kurt Masur.

Conductor and composer Esa‐Pekka Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra since 2008 and since 2003 Artistic Director of the Baltic Sea Festival, which invites celebrated orchestras, conductors and soloists to promote unity and ecological awareness among the countries around the Baltic Sea. After 17 years at its helm as Music Director, since 2009 he has also held the title of Conductor Laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2011, Salonen began a residency at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. Salonen’s appointment with the Philharmonia cements a relationship that dates back well over 25 years. He made his London conducting début with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1983, leading a now‐legendary performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. The odyssey continues with resounding projects, such as City of Dreams, a nine‐month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935, Infernal Dance featuring works by Béla Bartók and an interactive project RE‐RITE, an award‐winning digital installation of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring showcasing Esa‐Pekka’s dedication to technology, digital platforms and outreach.
