Musics of the Balkans: Hespèrion XXI, Jordi Savall & guests, Cité de la Musique

Over het evenement

The music of the Balkans, born of ancient empires: hear a history traced by Jordi Savall, as well as the heritage of the fanfares which embody the sound of the peninsula.

Plunging into the complex history of the Balkans, Jordi Savall paints a vast musical fresco of the region after Ottoman conquest. The symbolic point of departure he chooses is the fall of Constantinople in 1453; from that time, Savall tells, "the Ottoman Empire encomopassed all of the cultures of this rich peninsula for almost four centuries", not without a certain "tolerance" which allowed non‐Muslims to retain their customs, languages, and traditions.

Invited musicians will join Hespèrion XXI from Albania, Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Greece, Israel, Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia.
