Michel Tabachnik: Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona

Over het evenement

The Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona, under the direction of Michel Tabachnik, will perform works by Brahms, Bartok, and Debussy at the Auditori de Barcelona.

The discourse devoted to nature imbues the entire history of music. Composers have described, imitated, or used it as an excuse to search for the original sound of the history of nations. Debussy composed La Mer (1905) recalling his childhood summers in Cannes, a setting in which the seascape is idealized. La Mer masterfully fuses the restlessness of Turner's landscapes with the calm of the engravings of Japanese artist Hokusai, two of his favorite visual artists.

Once again, history and sound stories blend together in the fantastic Suite of Dances by Béla Bartók. Written in 1923 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the reunification of Budapest, it is a piece in six movements with origins in folklore. Unlike in other instances, Bartók does not quote existing passages: he creates his own original melodies of ethnic inspiration and synthesizes them, while still leaving room for humor (listen to the glissandi of the trombones in the second movement!).

Musician Hans Richter defined Brahms' third as his own Heroica. Whereas he took twenty years to create the first, he completed this one in just four months. It is the piece that most accurately sums up the composer's aesthetic.
