Mata Hari: a new Spy opera at the Budapest Spring Festival

Over het evenement

Attend the world premiere of a new opera about the infamous female agent.

One of the most mysterious stories of spying, whose investigation records were classified for 100 years, has come to inspire an unusual form of musical theatre, a spy opera.

The composer is Mátyás Várkonyi, the libretto is the work of Attila Béres. The story is “simple': there is a woman with a mystical aura who people are ready to give everything for in exchange for a dance, until she herself is enticed into a fateful series of events. The scene is Paris, the city of riotous joie de vivre, rebellious women, revolutionaries, artists and lovers — as well as silently scheming spies. This is where a woman on the run from her despot of a husband arrives, intent on conquering the world without the support of men. With her mysterious dances she brings the magic of far‐off India to Europe, and she rises to the stars. Then the war begins…

Making use of the most popular musical genres of the last century, the production melds the benefits of a tuneful opera and an engaging musical.
