Lisa Batiashvili, Michal Nesterowicz & Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: Shostakovich & Bruckner
Over het evenement
Be gripped by the intense colors and justaposition of complex and simple in Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto. Michal Nesterowicz conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, with acclaimed violinist Lisa Batiashvili.
Written during the period when Shostakovich was officially persona non grata and his music could not be performed, the Concerto contains numerous signs of the composer's frustration. Not least among these, at the beginning of the Passcaglia, the 'Fate' motif from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, and the 'Stalin' theme from Shostakovich's Seventh are juxtaposed! David Oistrakh, for whom the Concerto was composed called it 'a pithy Shakespearean role'. Bruckner's First Symphony, by comparison, revels in the nickname its composer bequeathed — 'The Pert Maid', despite its Wagnerian inspiration.
