Jonathan Nott conducts the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with guest oboist Francesco Di Rosa in a concert celebrating the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss' birth.

At the end of the Second World War Germany lay in ruins. One of the few great cultural figures left in the country, Richard Strauss lived an isolated existence of internal exile in Bavaria. A young American soldier and oboist asked the great composer to write a work for the instrument; the result was one of the most important oboe concertos ever to be committed to paper and remains an enduring masterpiece.
