In paradisum: Pärt, Holst, Duruflé and the eternal life

Over het evenement

Once again, musical theatre in the Johanneskirche: Nicola Glück directs Savitri, Gustav Holst’s chamber opera for three soloists and female chorus.

Savitri, the protagonist of this short opera, follows the Indian epos Mahabharata, to conquer death with true love. Wonderful music and the subject of love build the central themes at the centre of this production which is framed within two concert pieces.

The introduction of his musical evening will be led by Wolfgang Abendroth, with De profundis — a rendition of a psalm for male chorus by Arvo Pärt. The finale is created by the soothing Requiem by Maurice Duruflé — a work completely in the tradition of the famous Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, with hopeful, romantic tones that end with seven floating voices fading away. The programme embarks on the journey for the search for eternal life and shows various soundscapes on the way to paradise.

The düsseldorf festival! — formerly known as the altstadtherbst kulturfestival — presents in its 22nd edition a variety of classical music, contemporary dance and music, and sacred music. The Hilliard Ensemble, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's Dance Company, Vokalensemble Ars Cantandi, or the Smith Quartet are only a few international artists to be named.
