Gluck's La clemenza di Tito in Concert: Theater an der Wien

Over het evenement

A rare opportunity to hear Gluck's version of Metastasio's libretto.

In the 18th Century and before, the biggest name on any opera programme (after the singer, of course) was likely to be not the composer, but the librettist. Works were set by numerous musicians, according to local taste, but the librettists fame stretched far and wide, and none more so than Metastasio, who wrote more than 30 librettos, set by many more composers.

Some 40 years before Mozart, the great German opera‐reformer Gluck set about his own opera on the libretto La clemenza di Tito, about the consequences of a failed assassination attempt in classical Rome.
