Hear Leonidas Kavakos in Shostakovich's first concerto, as well as excerpts from Wagner's operas.

Valery Gergiev is the music director at the Mariisnky (formerly Kirov) Theatre where, under his leadership, Wagner has become a staple of their work in house, on tour, and on CD. Recordings of Parsifal and the Ring have been released to great acclaim. In this concert, Gergiev brings his experience to bear in excerpts from Parsifal, Götterdämmerung and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Shostakovich's fiery first violin concerto is dispatched with aplomb by Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos — a virtuoso as impressive as the concerto itself.
