With the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Valery Gergiev confronts the symphonies of Shostakovich.

The driving, anguished Fifth Symphony, created in the climate of terror created by Stalin's purges, finds a contrast in the more intimate Fourteenth; including solo soprano and bass parts, it is built around settings of poems by Rilke, Apollinaire, and Garcia Lorca.
