Sir John Eliot Gardiner, British pioneer of the original instruments movement, is a frequent invitee of the London Symphony Orchestra. He does not hesitate to ask ensembles for bold changes in playing style, notably with regard to vibrato, in the Classical and Romantic repertoire.

In this evocative program with the London Symphony Orchestra, Sir John Eliot Gardiner will be joined by the elegant Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires in a performance of Schumann's remarkable Piano Concerto; the fresh, nimble spirit of Mendelssohn pervades the overture and the symphony to be presented on this very special January evening.
