Alexei Lubimov, piano: Debussy & Scriabin, Opéra de Dijon

Over het evenement

Franco‐Russian sounds and perfumes are swirling in the evening air… As a penniless student, Debussy spent his holidays in Russia in the service of the wealthy Mme. von Meck, Tchaikovsky's secret benefactor. Russia would never disappear from Debussy's imagination and life. In fact, all of French life at the time was influenced by Russia -- esthetically, musically, and politically.

Though it is not known whether Debussy heard the music of Scriabin during his 1913 journey to Moscow, the two composers shared a sense of mysticism and a certain muted ecstasy. It is the connection between them that the celebrated pianist Alexei Lubimov will explore in this program of mysterious beauty, including selections from both composers' sets of preludes as well as Scriabin's Two Poems, op.32 and his late Sonata No. 9, "Black Mass".
