The period of the 'fin de siècle' at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries shook many certainties and culminated in the year of great tension 1913, which Florian Illies traces in his bestseller of the same name. General societal upset and individual irritation are common denominators with the year 2020: in 'Über Menschen' Juli Zeh becomes the chronicler of the first lockdown and dissects pandemic contemporary phenomena. The selected music between the passages read by Anna Schudt conveys the respective shock of the crisis‐ridden months a good century apart like a seismograph.
