Een programma dat de contrasterende invloeden van het tijdperk na de Tweede Wereldoorlog samenvat: de Verenigde Staten en de Sovjet‐Unie. Twee verschillende wereldbeelden en uitingen worden levendig weergegeven in de muziek van Sjostakovitsj, met name in zijn Vijfde symfonie – een reactie op de afkeuring door het regime van Stalin van zijn Lady Macbeth van het district Mtsensk – en in de werken van Bernstein en Barber, die hun artistieke identiteit vormgaven in het McCarthyistische Amerika. Onder leiding van muziekdirecteur Emmanuel Tjeknavorian opent het programma met Bernsteins Candide Overture en is Anne Akiko Meyers te horen als soliste in Barbers Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14.

Orkest: Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi

Known colloquially as 'La Verdi', Milan's famed symphony orchestra was formed in the early 90s to supplement the city's already‐generous cultural offering. Making its home in Milan's Auditorio, La Verdi features among Europe's most respected and admired symphonic ensembles. Its first Musical Director, Ricardo Chailly, now holds the title of Conductor Laureate, while the Austrian conductor, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, a fast‐rising star in the orchestral firmament took over the role of Musical Director in 2024, following in the footsteps of several major names in the classical world. La Verdi welcomes a starry roster of soloists and guest conductors over the course of an extensive and varied annual season, and regularly features as guests of honour at important state occasions and international concert engagements.
