De kleine Californische kuststad Carmel-by-the-Sea is net zo beroemd om zijn schoonheid als om zijn rijke culturele geschiedenis. Carmel heeft kunstenaars, muzikanten en schrijvers aangetrokken sinds de stad aan het begin van de 20e eeuw werd opgenomen in de werelderfgoedlijst, toen het de thuisbasis werd van een kunstenaarskolonie.
Sinds 1935 wordt in de stad het Carmel Bach Festival gehouden.
