Auditorium van Santo Stefano aan de Ponte Vecchio
Het Auditorium van Santo Stefano al Ponte Vecchio ligt in het hart van Florence, vlak naast de beroemde Ponte Vecchio. De kerk, die nu wordt gebruikt als concertzaal, dateert uit 1116 en wordt beschouwd als een van de oudste kerken van de stad. Een mix van architecturale stijlen, variërend van Romaans tot Gotisch en Barok, vormen samen een uniek podium voor culturele en muzikale optredens. De kerk is versierd met talrijke uitzonderlijke kunstwerken, waaronder het kruisbeeld uit de Rennaissance en de crypte in middeleeuwse stijl. Ondanks de grote schade tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de overstroming van 1996 werden veel kunstwerken gered en in zeer goede staat gehouden. Tijdens een recente restauratie (1993) werd een 15e-eeuws fresco uit de school van Botticelli ontdekt. Santo Stefano al Ponte Vecchio werd heropend als plaats voor culturele en muzikale activiteiten en is nu een belangrijk onderdeel van het artistieke leven in Florence dankzij het prachtig gedecoreerde interieur en de perfecte akoestiek.

Concerto piacevole anche se nelle locandine si parlava di orchestra, in realtà era un sestetto di archi (due violini, due viole, violoncello e contrabbasso), bella la chiesa ma troppo calda, date le temperature fiorentine necessita di aria condizionata.

We were very disappointed with our Saturday evening concert. It was perhaps the worst professional performance we have attended especially for the hundreds of Euros cost of the tickets for my family. The ensemble played as though they had never rehearsed together and the performance was unmusical and uninspired (despite a program which contained fabulous music from the greatest composers). Entrances were ragged, weak, ill timed and not together. Endings of phrases were rushed with the resolution cut short and inadequate sustain. Appropriate pauses and rests between phrases were ignored as though the group were in a hurry to leave. The first violin, despite being the soloist, appeared to make no effort to cue or otherwise lead the group and didn't have a mastery of the music as one would expect. I've never been to a professional performance where I so frequently grimaced or recoiled at the sound of missed notes, botched entrances and out of tune notes. This was an absolutely dreadful concert.

The auditorium was lovely but I would have liked to see the original paintings behind the screen. The musicians were talented and delightful! However I had no idea who they were. Maybe an intro of even the first violinist as a start. Lovely evening!
