Basisslag
In het graafschap Hampshire aan de zuidkust van het land ligt Basingstoke. De eigenlijke stad heeft iets meer dan 80.000 inwoners, maar dit is niet waar, want de stad versmelt schijnbaar met haar voorsteden. De grotere gemeente Basingstoke en Deane, die ook de voorsteden omvat, telt ongeveer 150.000 inwoners.
Basingstoke ligt in de buurt van Reading en de provincie Winchester en heeft efficiënte transportverbindingen met de omliggende stedelijke centra en de hoofdstad. De stad heeft een ideale ligging voor de toegang tot de snelwegen M3 en M4 en is slechts 45 minuten met de trein van Waterloo verwijderd.
In zijn beginjaren begon Basingstoke als een kleine marktplaats in de tijd van de Angelsaksen en werd later in het Doomsday Book als een koninklijk landhuis bestempeld. Het Tudor verleden van het gebied kan tot op de dag van vandaag worden gezien in de ruïnes van Basing House die in het dorp Old Basing net buiten de belangrijkste stedelijke wildgroei van Basingstoke staan. In de afgelopen jaren is de bevolking van de stad met de groei van de hoofdstad naar buiten gezwollen, en in de jaren zestig werd het centrum van de stad volledig herbouwd en werd een ooit historische stad omgevormd tot een veel bespottelijk doolhof van beton dat, het was een grapje, alleen geschikt was voor accountants om in te wonen.
Deze komische verbinding gaat letterlijk eeuwen terug naar de tijd van Shakespeare die in het tweede deel van Henry IV op een minder dan complementaire manier naar Basingstoke verwees, en ook de muzikale schrijvers Gilbert en Sullivan noemen het in een van hun opera's, de stad duikt zelfs op in de Litchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tijdens een van Arthur Dent's rantsoen.
