Présenté en avant‐première en 1987, le premier opéra de John Adams, Nixon en Chine, a ouvert la voie à une nouvelle forme de pièce. Son sujet : la visite du président Richard Nixon en Chine communiste en 1972. Cet opéra contient lyrisme romantique, mélancolie, jazz, et même des éléments de grand orchestre, qui ne manqueront pas de galvaniser les spectateurs du Concertgebouw.
