Loan Sharking: Dance

A propos du spectacle

Which one is the odd one out? Stravinsky, Vivaldi, Dave Brubek, hip hop? Victor Quijada thinks none is.

Dancer and choreographer Victor Quijada grew up on the rap culture of the streets of Los Angeles, and then learned ballet in Montreal; the two now share the floor in the work of the RUBBERBANDance Group, which he founded. His choreography transgresses the conventions of both break dance and ballet, giving a free reign to one “at the expense of” the other. What is more, the same applies to music: he identifies the possibilities of hip hop in classical music and jazz.

Loan Sharking is a medley that collects milestones from the work of Quijada, from 2002, when RUBBERBANDance was founded, until 2008. A proud display of the ways in which he married the different styles, an essence in which the street meets with high art.
