The Venice Monteverdi Academy presents a series of concerts in memory of Monteverdi in Venice.
On August 19th 1613 Claudio Monteverdi was appointed as Maestro di Cappella at St. Mark's Church in Venice. 400 years later the Venice Monteverdi Academy celebrates his art and work with a series of concerts at the Basilica dei Frari, where Claudio Monteverdi was buried in 1643.
'I am the music …' — Monteverdi at the Frari, scheduled from May 31st to June 16th, 2013, offers a spiritual approach to the music of Monteverdi: respect, admiration and attempt to understand the deep meaning his music.
On May 31st, Roberto Zarpellon conducts the Venice Academy Monteverdi Choir, the Lorenzo da Ponte Chamber Orchestra on historical instruments, and the Schola Gregoriana Reale Corte Armonica Caterina Cornaro. They present the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, a composition that Monteverdi sent 'under consideration' to the Procurator of St. Mark, while still paying service at the court of Mantua.
