En 1870, Richard Wagner composa une charmante pièce instrumentale, Siegfried Idyll, pour 13 instruments, en guise de cadeau d'anniversaire pour sa femme Cosima, qui venait de donner naissance à leur cher fils Siegfried. La première représentation fut une surprise pour Cosima lorsqu'elle se réveilla le matin de Noël dans leur villa familiale à Tribschen, près de Lucerne. Si l'Idyll dégage une intimité tendre et émouvante, elle est associée de manière intrigante à une œuvre contrastée : la Septième Symphonie de Bruckner, grandiose et solennelle, conçue pour captiver par sa sonorité majestueuse et la puissance spirituelle qu'elle dégage.
