Leipzig
Leipzig est une ville à grande tradition culturelle la création, dès 1409, de l'université va y catalyser l'essor de l'industrie de l'édition, consacrée en 1912 par l'installation de la Bibliothèque allemande. Carré d'art (Museum der bildenden Künste) ouvert en 2005.Johann Sebastian Bach a composé une importante partie de son œuvre à Leipzig alors qu'il était cantor à l'église Saint Thomas. Son tombeau se trouve dans une chapelle de l'église. L'orchestre du Gewandhaus est une autre de ses institutions musicales, un orchestre symphonique qui a vu se succéder les chefs les plus illustres, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Arthur Nikisch.
