Die Stadt Tartu wurde vor fast tausend Jahren vom russischen Fürsten Jaroslaw dem Weisen gegründet. Tartu stand unter der Herrschaft des Bischofs, des schwedischen Königreichs und des Russischen Reiches. Der alte deutsche Name von Tartu war Dorpat. Im 17. Jahrhundert gab der schwedische König Gustav Adolf den Befehl, hier eine Universität zu gründen. So entstand die Universität Tartu. Als Estland 1710 mit dem Russischen Reich vereinigt wurde, wurde die Universität Tartu zur ersten Universität des Russischen Reiches. Seit fast 400 Jahren ist die Universität eine moderne, hochrangige Bildungseinrichtung. Auf einem Hügel, umgeben von einer Mauer, sehen wir die malerischen Ruinen der St.-Petri-Kathedrale. Daneben befindet sich in einem ehemaligen Pulverkeller eine Kneipe mit den höchsten Decken der Welt, die 7 Meter hoch sind. Tartu ist eine Stadt der Denkmäler. So viele berühmte Persönlichkeiten sind mit Tartu verbunden, dass überall verschiedene Statuen zu finden sind. Wissenschaftler, die an der Universität studiert oder gelehrt haben, Helden nationaler Legenden oder einfach nur Kunstwerke moderner Bildhauer. Der Rathausplatz ist wunderschön. Mittags läutet eine Glocke auf dem Turm des Rathauses eine Melodie. Neben dem Platz fließt der Emajogi, der größte Fluss Estlands. Auf dem Weg nach Tartu durchqueren wir 130 km des estnischen Kernlandes, entdecken die Geschichte dieses Teils Estlands und sehen die Landschaft. In Tartu machen wir einen zweistündigen geführten Spaziergang durch die Innenstadt, der auf dem Rathausplatz endet. Anschließend haben Sie 1,5 Stunden Zeit, um in einem der Cafés oder Restaurants zu Mittag zu essen und Souvenirs zu kaufen, die Sie an diese schöne Stadt erinnern werden. Danach fahren wir zurück nach Tallinn.
