Pieter Wispelwey: Complete Bach Cello Suites
Über die Veranstaltung
For the third time, the Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey has put on a record his vision of Bach’s Six suites for solo cello, alpha and omega of the repertoire for the instrument.
Beyond the deepening of style and greater knowledge gained by experience and maturity, this new traversal of these masterpieces offers a more radical reading in its organological choices, Pieter Wispelwey opting for tuning at 392 hz, since this seems to have been the custom in Köthen at the time Bach composed them.
These suites, of which we are far from having plumbed the depths of their mysteries – to whom were they destined? What faith should we place in the single copy we possess, full of incoherencies, from the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach, the composer’s second wife? – find here a sharper light, which brings out the polyphonic and rhetorical richness of the musical discourse and its resonant secrets. Our ears find the strangeness and the surprise of the new, and the memories of previous hearings disappear under a calming freshness.
It is with this new and exciting experience that this year’s BachFest draws to a close, occasion to question and return to the rostrum and in our hearts a work that has founded our musical culture and never ceases to open up before us new paths.
