La Schola Cantorum

The Schola Cantorum is a private music school located in the Quartier Latin. It was founded by Charles Bordes in 1894. Since 1900 it has been housed in a former 17th century English Benedictine convent. The school was founded on the basis of offering a counterbalance to the Paris Conservatoire which at the time emphasised opera singing and opera composition in its curriculum. The Schola Cantorum offered composition students an opportunity to focus primarily on instrumental music.
