Nikolaj Znaider: Barcelona Symphony Orchestra

O wydarzeniu

Violinist Nikolaj Znaider and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stephane Denève, will perform works by Beethoven, Connesson, Dukas and Ravel at the Auditori de Barcelona.

The dancer Ida Rubinstein, who was also a patroness of Stravinsky, commissioned the Boléro because she wanted music with a Spanish character, which would fit perfectly to Ravel's aesthetics. Inspired by a Cordovan melody and fleeing from the structure of traditional ballet movements, Ravel built a lengthy piece in a long ostinato, which gradually grows to arrive at ecstasy. After a scandalous premiere in 1928 at the Paris Opera, which was criticized for the excessive sensuality of the dance, the work became so well known that it even surprised its now famous author.

Like Ravel, despite enjoying a very large catalogue, Paul Dukas is known to musical history as the author of just one work: L'Apprenti sorcier [The Sorcerer's Apprentice], a fantastic symphonic poem written in 1897, subtitled 'Scherzo inspired by a Goethe ballad'. The German's poem (1797), which chronicles the misadventures of a sorcerer's apprentice unable to manage the wand correctly, gives rise to a universe of sonic imagination that Walt Disney made good use of for the film Fantasia (1940).

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major by Beethoven is one of the concertos most beloved by violinists. Since its premiere in 1806 by Franz Clement, all the great violinists of the world, from Joseph Joachim to Itzhak Perlman, have approached it with devotion. On this occasion, it will be performed by Nikolaj Znaider, one of the leading violinists on the international scene.
