Mendelssohn's incidental music for Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' combines the fey and ethereal with the grandiose and comical to delectable effect — listen out for the donkey's 'hee‐haw' in the overture — and is one of the most popular classical works in history. That title can safely be said to be shared by Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, the opening of which is undoubtedly the most famous single musical statement in history.
