LISZT Piano Concerto No. 2/ Dance of Death/ Piano Concerto No. 1/ Hungarian Fantasy

O wydarzeniu

Experience classical music like never before in this astonishing performance of masterworks by Liszt at Budapest's remarkable Pesti Vigadó Concert Hall.

'For my 60th birthday, I wanted to surprise myself and the audience with piano concertos by Franz Liszt, the composer I feel closest to, and at the same time pay tribute to the memory of what I consider to be the greatest pianist, Zoltán Kocsis, who would have turned 70 this year. With these words, Károly Mocsári draws the audience's attention to his extraordinary concert. In fact, the pianist had a lifelong friendship with Zoltán Kocsis at the Liszt Academy. Both artists were devoted to the works of Franz Liszt, which is also reflected in the selection of the programme for this commemorative concert: in addition to the two great piano concertos in E flat major and A major, two other emblematic works in which the interplay between orchestra and piano is central will be heard. The Dance of Death was partly inspired by a fresco in Pisa the composer worked on it for more than 15 years until its premiere in 1865. It is based on one of the most famous Gregorian laments, the Dies Irae motif, found in numerous works, from Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique to Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini. It is a particularly virtuosic composition that is a real test for the performer, as is the Hungarian Fantasy on Folk Melodies, premiered in Pest in 1853 under the baton of Ferenc Erkel and with a solo by Liszt's later son‐in‐law, Hans von Bülow.
