Don Giovanni: Latvian National Opera

O wydarzeniu

Enjoy W.A. Mozart's opera Don Giovanni directed by Andrejs Žagars at Latvian National Opera this season.

The insatiable bon vivant Don Giovanni, for whom only a woman's beauty is sacred, loves merciless games. He'll abandon a lady without qualms, seduce a bride away from her own wedding, even kill — for him, nothing seems forbidden. The Commendatore, the father of Donna Anna, dies in a duel, and Don Giovanni invites statue on the Commendatore's grave to a dinner. But before the shocking conclusion, the opera also introduces the gentle, lovely Zerlina, the servant Leporello and his legendary catalogue of Don Giovanni's 2,000 lovers, the mysterious Donna Elvira, the vengeful Donna Anna, and, above all, the ingenious music of Mozart set to the libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte.

Director Andrejs Žagars: 'Don Giovanni is my tenth production, but my first Mozart. This opera came into my field of vision at a time when it seemed important for me, as a director, to find new challenges. Everybody knows the story of Don Giovanni. At the same time, the work conceals many riddles, which are difficult to solve but are also interesting assignments — they open up a range of possibilities for interpretation. This opera features wonderful music as well as strong dramatic material. I wanted to create wise, colourful, and contradictory characters, while renouncing stereotypes and respecting the personalities of the soloists.'
