Yim Hok‐man: Majestic Drums XVII

Awe‐inspiring, regal and magnificent – the Master and the Champs: With close to sixty years of percussion fame behind him, Yim Hok‐man, esteemed “Master of Chinese Percussion”, will be the star of this concert by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Majestic Drums XVII.
Masterminded by Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Yan Huichang, the occasion sees a fitting tribute to this icon of the genre by his many generations of students and his music fans, witnessed by the audience. Maestro Yim will lead with his mallets such percussion favourites as A Poem on the Drum – For Chinese Drums by Li Zhengui and Tan Dun, and Festivity of the Masses, a Chiuchow percussion piece by Chan Joh‐fai and Yu Yik‐man. Sharing their passion in drum music would be Maestro Yim’s many students, the Four Gig Heads Percussion Group, Refiner Drums, the Percussion Section of the HKCO, and children who were born in 2003 – the year the first Hong Kong Drum Festival was launched.
The programme includes Chasing the Suns, The Romping Golden Pheasants, Prince of Qin Takes His Roll Call,The Age of the Dragon etc.. Also featured in the programme is Huang Hsuan‐Ning, Champion of the Hong Kong Synergy Drum Competition 2011, who will come to Hong Kong to give a special performance of In the Deep of the Night. The concert will be a landmark in Chinese percussion music, when so many different generations of drummers meet to bear witness to the legacy and the awe‐inspiring achievements of a drum legend.
