Valery Gergiev & Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
O wydarzeniu
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra performs under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Works by Sibelius, Rimsky‐Korsakov, and Stravinsky are featured on their program at the Concertgebouw.
The young Russian Stravinsky was a sensation in Paris in 1910. His ballet Petrushka was a great success. It was a puppet show with Russian flair and some rough edges — the time for romanticising fairy tales was over. Rimsky‐Korsakov, Stravinsky's teacher, was still deeply rooted in ancient Russia, but he did not hesitate to criticize it. His opera The Golden Cockerel is a satirical play which was censored by the Czar. After Rimsky‐Korsakov's death it was re‐discovered, again in Paris, in front of a wildly enthusiastic audience. Sibelius' poetic Saga was immediately seen as typically Finnish, at a time when Finland wanted freedom from Russia.
