The Chinese Orphan: NCPA Original Opera

The Chinese Orphan is a new opera by talented Chinese composer Lei Lei and playwright Zou Jingzhi. Composed in 2011, the story focuses on the aristocratic Zhao family, betrayed and sentenced to death. 

When an official, Tu Angu, frames the Zhao family, they are sentenced to death. Zhao Wu is the lone survivor, an orphan who seeks to avenge his family as he grows up.

French writer Voltaire adapted this chilling tales into a play entitled L'orphelin de la Maison de Tchao. The 2010 film Sacrifice (Zhao Shi Gu Er) directed by Chen Kaige caused a sensation and has ensured that this story will remain etched in the hearts of the Chinese.

The dream team of composer Lei Lei and playwright Zou Jingzhi wish to highlight the China's values of sacrificing life for justice, and to promote Chinese culture and tradition on the international opera scene.
