The journey from the opening psalm, through the litanies, prayers, hymns and glorias is set with uncharacteristic soberness by Tchaikovsky. One of the most delightful orchestral composers of the 19th century, he brought all his skill and imagination to bear on these settings for a simple four‐part chorus.
