Prince Igor
O wydarzeniu
Enjoy the guest performance of Borodin's "Prince Igor" by the Belarus Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Time of action: 1185.
The composer adapted the libretto from the East Slavic epic “The Lay of Igor’s Host”, which recounts the campaign of Russian prince Igor Svyatoslavich against the invading Polovtsian tribes in 1185. The opera was left unfinished upon the composer’s death in 1887 and was edited and completed by Nikolai Rimsky‐Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov.
The musical and dramatic uniqueness of Borodin’s opera lies in the confrontation of two fundamentally different worlds – old Russia and the exotic Orient. Borodin drew not only on folk music and church music but also on urban romances of the 19th century. Borodin’s interest in the Polovtsians and other oriental people was awakened on the occasion of a scientific conference in 1874 in Kazan, the “gateway” to the East. The composer’s democratic views are reflected in his depiction of Polovtsians and Russians as of equal rank, only endowed with different temperaments and customs.
