Music of Heaven: Mozart & Martinaitis

O wydarzeniu

The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and the Vilnius Choir will perform works by Mozart and Martinaitis in the symphony concert titled “Music of Heaven”.

The Vilnius Choir may be one of such choirs in the world as some members are visually impaired. The company that marked its fortieth anniversary in 2010 gives over fifty concerts every year, while its repertoire includes more than 1000 compositions. One of them is Mozart’s solemn Mass that he wrote to celebrate his marriage to his beloved Constanza Weber and, as believed, her recovery after severe illness. It is not known whether Mozart did not complete the Mass or some of the score was lost, however, it has always been considered one of the grandest pieces of sacral music. The other mass performed at the concert is Martinaitis’ “Missa Misericordiae”. Written 2008, it as though transfers us to a much earlier time than Mozart’s: insertions of authentic Gregorian chant are heard as well as Bach’s rhetoric and in some places, there are echoes of Lithuanian hymns.
