In the music of Shostakovich, we hear the pain of an artist trying his best to hold together his integrity under an oppressive regime. The Fifth Symphony, with its bizarre marches, heart‐wrenching slow movement and a perhaps false climax, is still baffling music lovers. The First Cello Concerto is lighter in mood, but the heavy cadenza betrays everything.
