Méhul & Beethoven : Music for Napoleon at Versailles
O wydarzeniu
Relish music composed for Napoleon in the historic setting of Versailles' Royal Chapel. François Xavier Roth, Les Siècles, The Flanders Radio Choir and an exciting team of soloists perform Étienne Nicolas Méhul's Coronation Mass, and Beethoven's 'Eroica' Symphony.
Both composers were ultimately disappointed by their hero. Méhul's composition was disregarded in favor of the works of Giovanni Paisiello, while Beethoven eventually came to recognise that Napoleon was perhaps not the liberating hero he had thought. Nonetheless, the music Napoleon inspired is rich with its own virtues — Beethoven's work is certainly better‐known, but Méhul's Mass is a work of immense musical inventiveness and grand scale.
