Jimi Hendrix Tribute

O wydarzeniu

The king is dead, long live the king! Jimi Hendrix, the blues‐rock icon whom Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed as the greatest guitarist of all time, passed away in 1970. To mark the 40th anniversary of his death, the Band of Gypsys Reincarnation, led by guitarist László Halper, recorded an album of rare magnitude entitled 40 Years After.

The record, which features the playing of trumpeter Randy Brecker on several numbers, was received favourably not only by the Hungarian public but by the prestigious American jazz magazine DownBeat. At the start of his review, critic John Ephland was moved on hearing the Halper interpretation of If Six Was Nine to say that “Hendrix’s music really was set up to play jazz.”
For this occasion, Halper has arranged more of Hendrix’s classics while maintaining the greatest respect for the originals, creating an uncompromising brand of jazz in the process. For this production of the Band of Gypsys Reincarnation, one of the world’s hottest rhythm sections is delighted to join Halper and the “Hungarian Gypsys” for a concert timed to take place exactly one month before Jimi’s 70th birthday. When introducing his American guests, it is enough to mention some of their past musical collaborators. Eddie Gomez has played with Bill Evans, Jack DeJohnette, Ralph Towner and Chick Corea, while Steve Gadd’s resumé includes the names of Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Bob James, David Sanborn and Eric Clapton. The two men also formed the rhythm section of the first incarnation of legendary jazz fusion group Steps Ahead. The evening’s Hungarian guests are all outstanding instrumentalists who appeared on the first recording of the Band of Gypsys Reincarnation.
