Bolero

Bolero, taking its name from a Spanish folk dance, is a composition for orchestra written in 1928 by the French composer Maurice Ravel. The work was commissioned by the Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein and was originally intended to be a ballet piece. The premiere took place the same year in Grand Opera in Paris and was an enourmous success. Proud, confident and restless Ida Rubinstein danced to the hypnotizing music of bolero and reminded the public of “a wild animal in a cage”.
