Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
Amsterdam, Holandia
The opening of the Muziekgebouw aan'tij marks a special moment in Dutch music history. There are three factors which determine the arrival of a new concert hall: the wishes of the composers, the musicians and the audience.
100 years ago, the building of the Concertgebouw brought a change in the acoustic poverty of Amsterdam. The result was an internationally flourishing orchestral culture. In the late seventies, the ensembles managed to break free of traditional concert practices and the air was buzzing with innovation. From 1981, Jan Wolff cleared the way for this new music in the premises on the Weesperzijde, in Amsterdam, and within a few years, he had managed to place Muziekcentrum De IJsbreker firmly on the international musical map. As a consequence, the small concert hall was bursting at the seams and so, over eighteen years ago, he began his search for a new concert hall. It had to be a visionary building for the 21st century with more than one auditorium, plus rehearsal spaces and offices for ensembles and music organisations. And, of course, plenty of room for music, musicians and audiences!
The new Muziekgebouw aan'tij provides ensembles, composers and makers of music theatre with their own place. The stage and auditorium capacity can be adjusted better than ever before to the specific wishes of composers and musicians. Ensembles and organisations can rehearse and run their offices there. Musicians, composers and audiences can enjoy this building to the full in the refreshing climate of the IJ.
Good accessibility
The Muziekgebouw aan'tij has good accessibility for people with different abilities. There is a specially‐adapted lift and toilet. There are several wheelchair places available in the Main Auditorium for wheelchair users and their escorts. The Small Auditorium is also accessible via the elevator.
Parking
Disabled parking spaces are available in the parking garage under the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA)/Muziekgebouw aan'tij (entrance in front of the Passenger Terminal).
N.B. Because of the steep incline of the footbridge to the Muziekgebouw aan'tij and the raised entrance to the bridge deck, the use of this bridge is not advised for wheelchair users and rollator users. We kindly request you to use the pavement alongside the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Those who are hard of hearing
For those who are hard of hearing, the Muziekgebouw aan'tij is equipped with an infra‐red installation. The equipment needed for this can be picked up from the box office/service desk. For further information, please phone T. 020‐788 2000 (Mon — Sat from 12.00 to 19.00).
