Composed in memory of a recently‐deceased friend, and as the news of the horrors of the holocaust filtered through to the USSR, Shostakovich' Second Piano Trio makes notable use of klezmer themes. Beethoven's final String Trio begins the composer's powerful association with the key of c minor, and André Previn's decidely francophile Piano Trio reminds listeners of the composer's musical origins as a jazz pianist.
