The Gran Teatro del Liceu Orchestra and Choir perform the German composer's spectacular Ninth Symphony.
As his symphonic output unfolded, Beethoven's orchestration achieved ever greater fullness, so that each of the earlier symphonies became a necessary step towards 'the Ninth', which culminates with the human voice. The inclusion of a choral movement was a symphonic revolution and Beethoven chose the words of the 'Ode to Joy', which convey Friedrich Schiller's idealistic vision of brotherhood among peoples: a veritable hymn to freedom.
