Norma

演出简介

Vincenzo Bellini’s opera "Norma" will be presented as a concert performance by the Estonian National Opera at the Estonia Concert Hall.

Bellini’s Norma is considered the most popular work of the era of Romanticism, its popularity growing with every performance. By the end of the 19th century, there were productions in 35 countries in 16 different languages. Bellini valued his opera highly.

“If I were shipwrecked,“ he wrote to a friend, „I would leave all of my other operas and try to save Norma.” Richard Wagner has conducted the work himself and marvelled at its unhindered melodic flow that translates sentiments with unusual nobility. The mystery lies in the Bellini‐like simplicity of music that carries great expressive power and sets high demands for the interpreter of the title role. The part of Norma calls for tremendous vocal control of range and dynamics to express a wide range of emotions: maternal love, jealousy and resignation. Famous 20th century interpreters of the title‐role have included Maria Callas, Leyla Gencer, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé and Renata Scotto.

The concert performance of Bellini’s Norma is already the 10th in the long series of Estonian National Opera concert performances. Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Catalani’s La Wally, Bellini’s I puritani, Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, Donizetti’s Poliuto, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Rimsky‐Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride have been performed to a great acclaim in previous seasons.

In the leading roles: Virginia Wagner (Argentina) and Kaludi Kaludow (Bulgaria)
