Mendelssohn: Elijah

演出简介

The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra invites to its symphony concert with Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah".

The orchestra and Ąžuoliukas Choir will perform one of the most beautiful compositions of sacral music – the oratorio “Elijah” after texts from the Old Testament. Mendelssohn‐Bartholdy must have admired the music by the then forgotten Bach and still popular Handel as nobody else in the nineteenth century. “Elijah” composed in 1846 is his tribute to the two outstanding composers – the oratorio is based on the grandeur and graceful lines of the beginning of the Baroque period, at the same time, being full of the lyricism of the beginning of Romanticism. In the two‐movement oratorio the action takes place at about 850 BC when one of the most important prophets of the Old Testament, Elijah, travelling across Israel denounces idolatry, sees visions, and having fulfilled the tasks the Lord gave him ascends to heaven on a chariot of fire. First performed at the Birmingham Music Festival in 1846, the masterpiece is one of the most popular compositions of early Romanticism.
