The Festival Ljubljana presents the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre of St Petersburg with pianist Denis Matsuev, under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Prokofiev are the staples of Valery Gergiev's repertoire. On this occasion, a pair of composers are placed in the heart of the concert with works that have achieved the highest level of popularity within their genres: Of the five piano concertos by Sergei Prokofiev it is the third that both audience and critics are most taken by, while Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring has practically achieved the status of a cult composition. Music as ritual, as an explosion of rhythm, barbarity and lyricism, sensuality and poeticism. 

Valery Gergiev and his ensemble demonstrate the richness of Russian musical culture at the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana.
