La Fille du Régiment

演出简介

Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment will be performed by a wonderful cast including Patrizia Ciofi and Ann Murray at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

La Fille du Régiment is an opéra‐comique in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti with libretto by Jules‐Henri Vernoy de Saint‐Georges and Jean‐François‐Alfred Bayard. It was first performed on 11 February 1840 in the Salle de la Bourse at the Opéra‐Comique in Paris and first performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 6 November 1950.

Following Rossini's retirement and the death of Bellini, Donizetti was keen win over Parisian audiences. He wrote a brilliant and varied work that demands supreme mastery of vocal technique. The tenor aria «Pour mon âme», for instance, with its famous nine high C's, as well as some soprano arias, push the singers to the limits of possibility.

The plot relates the love affair of Marie and Tonio. Marie, the vivandière of a French regiment encamped in Switzerland, is the soldiers' pet and is treated by Sergeant Sulpice as his adopted daughter; young Tonio has joined the army in the hope of marrying her.  But then the Marquise de Berkenfield, the lady of the nearby castle, arrives. She is a friend of Sulpice's and claims also to be Marie's aunt, and she takes her away to give her an education befitting a lady.  Marie, bored of singing and dancing lessons, rebels when the Marquise announces she is to marry the disagreeable son of the Duchesse de Krakenthorp. When the regiment arrives, Marie sings the cabaletta «Salut à la France», which has become something akin to a national anthem, and Tonio lays claim to her love. The tale has a joyful ending: the Marquise, who turns out to be Marie's mother, allows her to achieve happiness by marrying Tonio.
