Te Deum

演出简介

Throughout his life, Handel trusted in the Word of God and was inspired to some of his greatest pieces by Him.

At the age of 22, he brought his monumental Dixit Dominus into being, a stroke of genius of overwhelming energy that no other musical version of a psalm from that time displayed: "In every way, his creations were so full of fire and power that one couldn't compare him to the gentle gracefulness of the Italians" said his first biographer, John Mainwaring. Thirty years later, Handel let the wild G Minor of those Roman psalms follow the beaming D Major of his "Dettingen Te Deum". The Londoners could bask in the rays reflecting off of the trumpets, after King George II personally led his troops to victory over France at the Battle of Dettingen. However, even in that moment of triumph, Handel, the great humanist, took time to reflect on the wounded and the fallen. For Nikolaus Harnoncourt, both works are ideal models: the fiery "Stile concitato" of the Dixit Dominus and the grim victory music of the Te Deum with its, typically Handel, shady side.
