Messiaen in het Orgelpark

演出简介

The organist Willem Tanke plays various compositions by Messiean at the Orgelpark.

The first performance of Olivier Messiaen’s 'Quatuor pour la fin du temps' took place in 1941 and was given for an audience of German officers and a few hundred prisoners of war; Messiaen himself was one of them.
This chamber concerto in eight movements is written for the four instruments – violin, clarinet, piano and cello – that by chance were available in Stalag VIII A in Görlitz in Germany. For the practising Catholic Messiaen, the phrase pour la fin du temps – ‘for the end of time’ – primarily signified consolation and solace, for eternity is now: it begins with birdsong in the early morning and is continued in Man.
In the second part of this concert organist Willem Tanke plays a varied selection of Messiaen’s organ works, including meditations on Christ’s life, Passion and resurrection.

This concert is an homage to the great French composer and presented at this year's Holland Festival!
