%u201CJaan Rääts, Tõnu Kõrvits, Giuseppe Verdi %u2013 at first glance it is quite difficult to see the connection between these three composers. Nevertheless, there is a link for the members of Tobias String Quartet. This link is music, which means a lot to us and which speaks to us. It is said that we all come from our childhood. The musicians of the quartet are mostly children of the 1960ies. We remember that time as one of happiness and energy, just like Jaan Rääts%u2019 Concert for Chamber Orchestra. Tõnu Kõrvits%u2019 new composition is dedicated to the Tobias String Quartet. For us it is extremely important and exciting to collaborate with contemporary composers. The members of the quartet have been long tied to opera music; many of us still play in the symphony orchestra of the Estonian National Opera. Verdi%u2019s only chamber music work contains melodies as beautiful and emotions just as grand that can be found in his famous operas La Traviata, Othello etc. So %u2013 through childhood to the contemporary classics and to eternal values.%u201D(Aare Tammesalu)
Since the foundation of the quartet in the summer of 2000 Tobias String Quartet has performed regularly at concerts and festivals. The members of the quartet had collaborated before but they performed under the name Tobias String Quartet for the first time in 2001 at the festival 'Tubin and His Time'. The quartet%u2019s name is a tribute to Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias who wrote the first Estonian string quartet. The repertoire of the quartet includes masterpieces of the world%u2019s quartet literature and also Estonian music has an important part in it.
